Food Shelves

Prairie Five operates 3 food Shelves and 5 clothing centers in our 5 county area.

The food shelves are operated to provide food to those persons who are in need of a temporary, emergency food supply (3 days worth of food). Anyone who is in need may use the food shelf. There is no financial statement to fill out. The food is provided to those who state a need and is administered on the honor system. Clothing centers are open to all in need of good used clothing at a reduced price. Donations of clean usable clothing are accepted at all centers.

Food Shelves are generally in operation Monday through Friday. Please call ahead to the food shelf to inquire about the days/hours that they are in operation. In the event of an Emergency, you may contact the County Sheriff’s Office.



Big Stone County

Chippewa County

The Chippewa County Food Shelf is located at the Prairie 5 office in the Community Services Building at 7th St and Washington Ave. 1st floor, Montevideo, MN. The Food Shelf is run by Prairie 5 staff and volunteers. For more information call (320)269-6578. Lac qui Parle County

The community food shelf is located in the west wing of the MMN Elementary School at 422 5th Ave. Emergency contact phones numbers are (320)598-7919 or (320)598-3469 or (320)598-3395. Prairie 5 operates a clothing center in the Head Start Office at 422 5th Ave. Madison, MN. For more information call (320)598-3027.

Swift County

The Swift County Food Shelf is located in the Prairie 5 clothing center, East Hwy 12, Benson MN. The food shelf and clothing center are staffed by volunteers. For more information call (320)842-8565.



Yellow Medicine County

The Canby Food Shelf is located in the Prairie 5 Clothing center at 106 St. Olaf North, Canby. The food shelf is staffed by volunteers. For more info call (507)223-5471.

The food shelf is located at Yellow Medicine Courthouse in Granite Falls MN. It is open on Wednesdays from 9-3.



MAC – Mother’s and Children Nutrition assistance

What food does MAC and NAPS provide?

A nutritious, balance monthly food package:
  • Canned fruits, vegetable and juices
  • Dry and canned milk, American cheese
  • Canned meat, peanut butter, dry beans
  • Cereal and rice, instant potatoes and pasta
Who qualifies? Minnesota residents at 185% of poverty level
