Zoning and Subdivision Code

Municipalities can take a stand to ensure the community becomes or stays an area welcoming for citizens to walk and bike safely in an appealing environment conducive to such exercise and transportation. A great way to ensure this is through setting zoning and subdivision code that support active living efforts. For example, many municipalities require that any new subdivisions include the construction and maintenance of sidewalks by the builder. Policy can also include requirements for a Health Impact Assessment be completed for any construction projects that meet certain specifications expected to impact a significant portion of the population.
