South West Central Safe Communities Coalition

South West Central Safe Communities Coalition is funded through a grant to work towards creating safer roadways in a 5 county area. The coalition is made up of community members from Swift, Big Stone, Chippewa, Lac Qui Parle and Yellow Medicine counties.

Safe Communities Goals
  1. Increase seat belt use among all age groups within the communities
  2. Reduce incidence of impaired driving by adults and teens
  3. Promote safe driving
  4. Decrease the number of children that are not properly restrained
  5. Reduce the number of traffic accidents in the 5 counties
Within these 5 counties the coalition does several different activities throughout the year both in the community and in the schools. Some of these activities include:
  1. Working with Law Enforcement to promote mobilization efforts during specific times of the year, such as Labor Day.
  2. Collaborating with the schools doing seatbelt challenges, mock crashes and speaker panels regarding drunk driving; some schools also use breathalyzers before grand march and at post prom parties.
  3. Billboards and signs promoting safe driving and seatbelt use
  4. Car seat clinics to provide parents with car seats if they do not have them and to instruct parents how to install them properly
If you are interested in joining the coalition group or learning more about it, this website provides more information on Safe Communities. You can also contact your local Public Health offices to see if there is a group in your community. http://www.dps.state.mn.us/ots/topic_areas/Safe_Communities/default.asp
