Tobacco

TV and media have done a great job of targeting teens with smoking ads but what they forget to mention are the negative effects of tobacco use. There are many misconceptions about tobacco use, but the truth is, there are no benefits to tobacco use or safer tobacco products. All tobacco products can have life long effects on your health. Smoking is the leading cause of lung, mouth, throat, bladder, pancreas and kidney cancer; to see other health effects.

Health Effects of Tobacco Use
  • Increased Heart Rate
  • Increased Blood Pressure
  • Decreased blood circulation
  • Increased potential for blood clots which could lead to a stroke
  • Decreased High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol; the good kind of cholesterol
  • Increase risk of atherosclerosis Atherosclerosis: hardening of the arteries
  • Decreased sensations
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Decreased physical fitness
  • Overall worse health
Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, most of which are present in tobacco and transfer into smoke or are formed when the tobacco is burned. 250 of these chemicals are proven to be harmful and 50 of them are known to cause cancer.

Teen smoking facts
  • Every day 4,000 teens try smoking and another 2,000 become regular smokers having at least one cigarette a day.
  • Teen smokers are more likely to use alcohol and other illegal drugs compared to teens that chose not to smoke
  • 54% of high school students have tried smoking a cigarette
  • Approximately 90% of adult smokers began smoking before they were 18 years old, the younger you start, the more likely you are to smoke in your adult years
  • More than 440,000 Americans die each year due to tobacco use; most of the people involved began using tobacco before the age of 18
  • Smokeless tobacco contains 2.5 times as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes


Signs your friend may be using a tobacco product
  • Bad breath
  • Frequent mouth sores
  • Yellow fingers and teeth
  • Smelling like smoke on clothing and hair
  • Bleeding gums
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing
  • Frequent colds
  • Decreased sense of smell and taste
  • Decreased performance in sports
Smoking costs you more than just your health. If you buy a pack of cigarettes at $3.00 per pack and smoke one pack a day you will spend around $1, 092 per year. Take this times 20 years and you have spent $21,840 which could be a new car or a down payment on a house.



Second hand smoke

Second hand smoke is also called involuntary or passive smoking. A person can be exposed to second hand smoke in several ways. Anytime you are in an area where smoking is taking place, you are also inhaling the chemicals. Even small amounts of exposure can lead to health effects.

Second hand smoke is the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers.
